Nonno Nino

Born in the heart of Naples, in a crumbling villa full of noise, cousins, and simmering saucepots, Nino was raised on sunshine, sarcasm, and tomatoes. The kind of man who whistled while he stirred, told jokes with his eyes, and claimed that his sugo was the only inheritance anyone needed.

His mother, Rosalba, grew the tomatoes herself – rows of magic in the backyard that ripened under the Italian sun and were handpicked at the exact moment between “firm” and “fainting.” His father, Niccolo, was a mandolin player who never measured anything – including ingredients. But Nino? He inherited both their gifts: precision, passion, and pizzazz.

His Napoli-Style Tomato Sauce is simple, but deceptively so – a base of olive oil, fresh garlic, crushed tomatoes, a handful of torn basil, and a whisper of sea salt. No sugar. No drama. Just a low simmer and the occasional taste test followed by his signature satisfied grunt: “Mmmnh. Perfetto.”

He never overcooks it. He never blends it. He says sauce should “look like it knows where it came from.” And if anyone tries to add cream? Let’s just say they’re politely uninvited from dinner.

Nino’s sauce has been poured over pasta, spooned on pizza, and mopped up with crusty bread at every family gathering since 1948. He calls it his “red gold.”

Nino says:

“Good tomato sauce is like a Napoli sunset – warm, bold, and it’ll stay with you forever.”
